This private reserve features a large butterfly and bird observatory, hummingbird and orchid gardens, and nicely designed safe trails along the La Paz River with 5 large waterfalls. One will find lush, verdant green rainforest, lots of colorful birds, flowers and butterflies. There are two restaurants offering a typical lunch to visitors, surrounded by the lush tropical forest of the Poás region. Adjacent to the Waterfall Gardens, the Peace Lodge is situated – an exclusive hotel, which is described in more detail in the hotel descriptions.
The La Paz Waterfall Gardens are located on the slope of Poas Volcano, about 1 hour from San José. It's quite large, so you should plan on spending 3-5 hours here. There are self-guided trails starting at the Welcome Center, leading down to the bird observatory and butterfly dome, then following the La Paz river with its 5 magnificent waterfalls. All trails are either concrete or steel with handrails, and are extremely well-designed for people of all ages and abilities.
In January 2008, a strong earthquake destroyed part of the complex, which after extensive renovations re-opened the following year. The gorgeous street connecting Varablance with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and is now ready to be used as a picturesque alternative to get to the Caribbean Lowlands (GPS recommended!)
