The Braulio Carrillo National Park is located about 45 minutes away from San José and has been founded in the 1970s. With an area of about 450 km2 it is one of the largest protected areas in the country and thanks to the several different life zones, it is home to a big part of the Costa Rican flora and fauna.
The very dense vegetation that reaches from the lowlands up to the mountainous rain forest makes it difficult to visit the park. Yet, on the highway leading right through the park towards the Caribbean coast and which has been built to replace the railroad line, the visitor finds several ranger stations with walkways of different durations. Especially during the early morning, the national park Braulio Carrilo offers breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest slowly emerging from the clouds.
