Hike through
the amazing world of the tree giants, of bright-red Heliconia,
whirling humming birds and noisy monkeys. The tropical warmth
provides this land with unlimited growth, which is home for
an incredible variety of species.
This excursion leads us through
primary and secondary rainforest at Corcovado National Park,
all across Osa Peninsula in the Southwest of the country down
to the Pacific coast. This Costa Rican landscape is hardly
explored, and whoever experiences this precious pearl in the
sweat of his brow (in the true meaning of the expression),
will be highly rewarded: the immense variety of species of
flora and fauna that can be found here is unique, and the
jungle atmosphere at the ranger and research stations where
we stay overnight beats any luxury hotel lodge.

The humid and warm climate of the tropics
demands more from the hiker than he or she might be used to
at home, in good physical condition this should not be a problem.
And whoever does not mind a heavy rain shower and meets plants
and animals with curiosity and respect will take home an unforgettable
and very special experience.

Day 2 |
Cerro de Oro
Today we will take the morning bus to La
Palma (around 45 minutes) close to Corcovado National Park.
From here we will hike through different kinds of vegetation;
several times we have to cross the small river Rio Rincón
until reaching the small gold prospectors settlement Unioro.
Here, at Cerro de Oro Lodge, you will spend the night in very
rustic rooms with shared baths.
The afternoon is at your disposal
to explore the surrounding rainforest. Several trails lead
you from Cerro de Oro into the dense forest and to places
with spectacular views of the vegetation of the national park;
with some luck you might even spot scarlet macaws,
monkeys or other inhabitants of the rainforest.

Day 3 |
From Los Patos to Sirena
Very early departure for our second
hike (total of around 25 km - approx. 8 hours). Our trail
leads us first around 2.5 km to the park entrance and then
to the ranger station Los Patos (3 more km), where we will
be served a hearty breakfast. We continue through exciting,
pristine rainforest. In the late afternoon we will arrive
at the ranger and research station Sirena on the Pacific coast....
never before has a shower been so refreshing... And the dinner
prepared by the ranger cook, could not be more delicious!

Day 4 |

are well-marked hiking trails, leading through different forms
of the rain forest. We will observe birds, monkeys and peccaries
(wild pigs) in the dense forest, crabs and iguanas on the
beach or ... The sunsets from the porch of the ranger station
are unforgettable: herds of monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans
and many other birds inhabiting the surrounding trees allow
us to experience the rainforest with all our senses.
There is also the possibility to explore the jungle river
Rio Sirena by canoe (US $ 5 per hour).

Day 5 |
Early in the morning we leave this
little paradise for our last hike to Carate (around
16 km). Our departure time will depend on the tide as we will
have to cross two rivers at low tide. We will hike south along
the Pacific Ocean: partly walking on deserted, pristine beaches.
Again, our hike will be accompanied by scarlet macaws and
other animals of the rainforest until the ranger station La
Leona and then Carate,
where we will be picked up by a Jeep-Taxi that will take us
back to Puerto Jimenez (approx. 1 hours drive).

Day 6 |
After breakfast
there is time to stroll around the small village Puerto Jimenez.
Around midday we will fly back to San Jose and civilisation. |
|
|
Option: |
The hike on day
5 from La Sirena to Carate may be replaced by a flight with
the "jungle cab" from Sirena to Puerto Jimenez to
reach a SANSA flight back to San Jose the same day. In this
case, the tour would be shortened by 1 day. |
