Be prepared to get muddy and wet on this tour - here we are in the heart of the rainforest: it rains a lot, the ground is muddy and the tractor ride is most adventurous. But - this experience will make you forget everything else...

Rara Avis is a remote virgin forest area of more than 2,471 acres at the eastern side of the Braulio Carrillo National Park and is protected by a private initiative. The biological research station is an excellent example that the rainforest can be made economically productive and so be saved from destruction. In Rara Avis, more than 330 different kinds of birds have been discovered, and besides innumerable kinds of bromeliad, orchids and lianas you are most likely to see monkeys, anteaters and coatimundis. Though you may spot tracks of tapirs and jungle cats, these animals are hardly to be seen, since the huge forest area gives them enough space to withdraw from „invaders".

Day 1

SAN JOSÉ – BRAULIO CARILLO NATIONAL PARK - RARA AVIS - (D)
We have a very early departure from San José, passing through the Braulio Carillo National Park, on the way to Horquetas. From here, it takes the tractor of the research station about 4 hours for the 10 mile muddy path. Far away from civilization, in the middle of the rainforest, you will stay in a simple, rustic jungle lodge near a waterfall.

Day 2

RARA AVIS RAINFOREST - (BF,L,D)
Together with a naturalist guide, you experience the diversity of the jungle on different trails and may take a refreshing swim in the crystal clear pool of the waterfall.

Day 3

BACK TO SAN JOSE - (BF)
After lunch on the 3rd day, the tractor takes you back to Horquetas; departure to San José from there. (Late evening arrival).
