T13h hiking / Multi-Sport Adventure Rincón de la Vieja Volcano - 4 days

This 34,595 acres national park is a volcanic massif of which the burnt-out Santa Maria (6,255 ft.) and the gently active Rincón de la Vieja (6,220 ft.) that last erupted in November 1995, are the highest volcanoes. Experience the fascinating fauna and flora that changes from wet and dry to cloud forest; geysers, boiling mud pools, fumaroles and hot sulfur springs will take you into the magic world of Rincón de la Vieja!

Day 3

Hike to the Crater of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano - (BF,BL,D)
Early ascent to Rincón de la Vieja's crater (about 6 hours); 3,940 ft. / 1200 m of height are to be covered. The highlight of this strenuous full day hike is not only the crater itself but the different life zones resulting from the changes in altitude that we cross. The views are spectacular: on clear days you will be able to see the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, as well as the Nicaragua Lake. The final ascent is over exposed lava rock, climbing steeply and often in the clouds. On some days, because of strong winds up there, we may have to return before reaching the summit. On our way we will have a picnic lunch.
PLEASE NOTE: crater trail currently closed (April 2016), alternative hikes in the park can be offered.
