Costa Rica disposes of a wide network of roads, but it should be taken into account that only a small portion of the 19,000 miles of „road" is asphalt road and in good shape. All the rest is dirt and gravel roads.
For driving within the Central Valley region only, you should not have any problems with a rental car that is not equipped with 4WD. However, for all other parts of the country, we highly recommended an all-terrain vehicle (4x4), not only because of the four wheel drive, but also because of the higher clearance and stability of this type of vehicle.
